A Reminder about Joy in Activism and ... the final Making Change Happen Workshop
Find a little inspiration from my favorite recent read, and join the May 21 workshop to build your changemaking toolkit
Hey Changemakers!
For the past few weeks, as I’ve been getting ready for my keynote about radical optimism and museum futures at the MuseumNext conference in London next month, I have been diving into some inspiring books about a wide range of topics—from activism and change to imagination, curiosity, and radical empathy.

One of the books that’s been resonating a lot with me is the one I just finished called The Lightmaker’s Manifesto: How to Work for Change Without Losing Your Joy by activist, photographer, and leadership coach Karen Walrond. I hope to have a longer post about the key take aways for me, but for now I want to share a few quotes that stood out to me about the value of joy in the challenging work of change.
At the very beginning of her book, Walrond sets the stage by boldly asking: “Could advocacy fuel joy—and vice versa?” After reading those words, I was hooked. She centers joy within activism for its power to deepen this work through meaning and purpose. Walrond continues:
“Even though bringing joy to the work is one of the biggest secret ingredients to activism, it’s also one of the most ignored ones.”
This quote (and Walrond’s entire book) really resonated with me. As I’ve been dreaming up alternative futures for museums and cultural institutions, I have been filled with a sense of joy, wonder, and imagination at the heart of it all. I look forward to sharing much more in the weeks to come. For now, I hope you find meaning in these words from Karen Walrond (and I recommend you check out her writing).
One Week from Today — the Final “Making Change Happen” Workshop
Speaking of change, the final “Making Change Happen” workshop is happening next Tuesday, May 21!
This time, the workshop is offered at an earlier time — 10 am-12 pm Eastern (3-5 pm London), to make it easier for anyone in Europe who might have been interested to be able to attend.
It’s been a while since I shared details of this workshop, so as a reminder - “Making Change Happen” is a 2-hour online workshop that’s designed as a fun, hands-on look at how to be an effective changemaker in your work.
Together, we’ll be working through a series of quick exercises that introduce some essential tools and strategies. These exercises are outlined in a workbook I’m sending out to all participants this week before the workshop begins.
The workshop registration is $49. Students registration is $39 (use the discount code STUDENT when you sign up).
You can also find more details about the structure of the workshop in this post from over a month ago.
After you sign up for the workshop, you’ll receive a Zoom link, follow-up details, and a digital copy of the workbook.
Are you ready to build your practice and skills as an agent of change? We’d love to have you in this final workshops!
